The Reference Library & Archives Reading Room

This facility has been developed to complement the new accessible store. A library, archive and study centre directly above the redeveloped store occupies the fourth floor of this space, housing library and rare books. It also contains the John and Joséphine Bowes’ archive that in the past has not been accessible to the public, the works on paper collection, and access to the internet and Adlib, the online database of the Museum’s collections. There are facilities for individuals and groups of learners, staff, and researchers, primarily from GCSE upwards. Opening times for access to this new state-of-the-art facility will be limited at first, but will be reviewed regularly to ensure the best possible service to the public. Operating on a two-week rota, opening times will be Tuesdays 10.30 – 4.00 & Wednesdays 10.30 – 1.00, alternating with Wednesdays 1.30 – 4.00 & Thursdays 10.30 – 4.00. Access to the Reading Room is free, but normal charges apply for the remainder of the Museum. Public use of the space will be encouraged, in line with the Museum’s policy of encouraging wider educational use of the building and collections. The space is fully accesible by stairs or lift.
